a) rename mixed numbers into improper fractions.

Example: 5 1/4 x 3 3/7

Change to 21/4 x 24/7

b) Reduce before completing the problem by using cancellation.

21/4 x 24/7 becomes 3/1 x 6/1

c) multiply numerators together and the denominators together.

3/1 x 6/1 = 18/1 =18
